Black detail on wedding dress for 1st time Bride?
I’m getting married in July & having a hard time finding a dress that I like. I want more of a destination style , not a ball gown. It will be outdoors on a Lake & I want something simple & breezy. All the wedding dresses have too much poof and they’re really heavy & constricting. I’m going to a Jessica McClintock store tomorrow and I found a lot of white w/ black detail on her website. I know I’m not as traditional as some people, but I was wondering how everyone feels about the black?

I’m using fuschia orchids w/ other tropicals, some orange accent flowers & green bridesmaids dresses.
I like the first one better but I put another picture up so you could see the black detail better on the top. The wedding will be at 5:30pm but in July the sun doesn’t set until 8pm. So, I guess it’s kind of daytime?
I found another one that’s kind of cool too. Maybe too many layers but on the right person it would be great & I think I’ll try it on.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. I guess we already know what we like for ourselves & just like I’ll never want a huge ball gown, not everyone is going to appreciate my style either. I appreciate your advice. I just wasn’t sure about the black but I asked my fiance and he really likes it a lot so we’re going to try on the 1st one for sure tomorrow.
My Thoughts . . . I can’t believe that’s the dress you posted. It’s the ONLY dress I’ve tried on that I really liked. If I don’t find something tomorrow, that’s probably what I’m getting. Good thinking!
Cardgirl . . . you would not be the first person to say that dresses I like look like nightgowns, etc. I live at the beach & our wedding is not at all poofy. I do appreciate the opinion though. I’ve already tried Alfred Angelo (getting my bridesmaid dresses there) and I only found one at David’s Bridal that was do-able. I’ve also tried on Maggie Sottero and honestly, they were hideous on me! Truly! I know I’m not the cookie cutter Bride, but I wanted something unique.

The dresses are beautiful! So many people consider black very classic and elegant. It’s reccommended that every woman own a "little black dress" and that every man own a black suit. All these people saying its so morbid. Don’t they know that in some cultures white is for funerals. If they saw a bride in full on white they’d probably panic!
I think the brightly colored flowers with this dress would be very stylish and chic. It would look really funky and cool. very modern. The image that I have in my head is like something you’d see in a bridal magazine. I say go for it.
Those gowns are beautiful. I’d wear them, and I’ll be a first time bride as well. In this century, weddings are as diverse as the people who have them. I especially love the first gown and I think the fuschia orchids will be soooo gorgous with either of those gowns. The dress will make the flowers look even more vibrant than they originally are. The gown and flowers will play nicely off each other.
I think that black with tropical colors is clashing, but it is your day so you should do whatever you like.
I think that a good way to wear black is in a black and white wedding, which I find very classy. Like this:

I think it’s gorgeous, and will look fantastic with the vibrant colored tropical flowers you’ve chosen. It’s different, but somehow still quite old-fashioned
Black is good! And it’s oh so trendy! Who cares if it’s not the tradtional white, you’ll love it more if it reflects you!
I think it will be a little goth… black on your wedding gown would be appropriate for a very formal, inside wedding… not a summer daytime wedding by the lake. Find an all white tea-length dress in a light and airy fabric (organza) and enjoy your big day!
LOVE the 1st one. It appears the design department of Jessica McClintock took some cues from Vera Wang. I think you should go for it! The dress is beautiful! I am all about being a non-traditionalist. I think the only people’s opinion that matter are yours and your fiance’s. I’m sure he already knows you aren’t walking down the aisle in a poofy concoction and you will go your own way.
Neither of those dresses are nice wedding dresses. Perhaps bridesmaids, but definetely not good as wedding dress.
Also, I don’t like the idea of the bride wearing black.
I like the first one the best because it is just a bit more formal. The other is more casual for an evening out in the Summer.
I think it would be fine to wear the Black and Cream Dress for a first time bride….
Those are very pretty. I say go for it.
I think that any dress will do if you are to be maried to the perfect person.
Love the dress only thing is I wonder if the white and black would clash with the tropic colors.
But the dress is beautiful and sophisticated!
Both are beautiful, I like the first one the best. Burgandy with black would be awesome! It would be lovely, if you used black ribbons on any bridesmaids flower arrangements. Then it would tie it all in. I like the new looks….
I’m not opposed to black detailing on a dress. It can add to the look.
I have to admit that I’m not crazy about the dresses you posted. To me, the bodice looks like the bride is wearing a crocheted sweater over top her dress.
Since you like simple, how about something like this? I know it doesn’t have any black on it - I’m going for the look and shape more than the colour.

Good luck with your shopping. I’m sure you’ll find a dress you love and that looks fantastic on you.
This is becoming more and more "fashionable" to trim the white gown with a startling color. I’m trying to find the name of the designer who first used black cording on her gown, but the knowledge is trapped in lala land. Givench, possibly.
My niece’s gown was fabulous, and it was trimmed in silver.
Big day is getting closer … enjoy it.
I like the first one. I think it would be lovely with the bright-colored flowers you have chosen.
And wearing black is fine. A former acquaintance wore all black when she wed. It’s just a matter of personal preference. If you like it, then go for it!
It’s gorgeous and there is nothing that dictates a first time bride HAS to wear all white, if that is the dress for you then wear it, I love the first one, it is so elegant. I love dresses that have a bit of colour and a bit of interesting detail, it is no one elses business as to whether you are a virgin or not, they should not speculate based on the colour of your dress (if they do remind them that more Indian/Asian brides are virgins and they traditionally wear red or pink) do not feel constricted by stuffy society, this is your special day and if that dress makes you feel like the bride of your dreams then that’s the dress for you.
I love the first dress. And I had black on my dress as a 1st time bride, it is stunning.
I don’t see why you would not wear white & black as a first time bride. Personally i love the first one.
If you like it and your future husband likes it as well, go for it. I like the 1st dress (don’t go for a dress that is not long leght dress).
Congrats!
Personally they look like nightgowns. Go to alfredangelo.com, verawang.com, dessy.com, maggiesottero.com. You will see lovely destination wedding gowns. I don’t like black at all at a wedding in any way shape or form..so that is my opinion. I am not opposed to another color contrast on the dress though say peach or pink or tiffany blue. Being that you are by a lake, try aqua or bluish green satin contrast..to correspond with the lake background.
