What is the average normal length of time to receive wedding pictures from a photographer?

We had a destination wedding, very simple ceremony with 10 people. The photog came with us ( we paid) and took 4 hours of photos if that. We are now on month 4 of waiting to get them back. He works full time and runs another business but I think I have been really patient or is this a normal amount of time?

He keeps stalling and pushing back the date?
Ok this is what I thought too. No, in my contract it doesn't tell me how long it would take. He is not professional and states it in the contract. I like his pictures but he thinks it is ok to tell me that his other business he runs along with his full time job has been unusally busy. I don't care! I think his priorities should be with current clients and not trying to pick up more. He also said he has had a hard time getting used to the new CS3. This was his first time shooting in Raw I think.

First, I think that you've learned a valuable lesson the hard way. It was probably a better idea to have paid a professional to shoot the wedding.

Length of time for deliverables depends on what the client orders and how long the process takes for the products to be made and shipped. I agree with the others that generally prints should not take more than a few days, if no extensive post processing is required. I can get 24 hour turnaround on an out of camera JPG image, no problem. However, if the bride/groom has had "bad day" and their complexion is not its best or their hair didn't cooperate or they had an clothing mishap and want me to fix it, then I might need a few extra days for working through that.

If you ordered other items from me, like say a gallery wrap or an album, then getting that prepped and sent to the printers, constructed and shipped to me, could be a week or two. Not to mention that if the client wants to have final approval of the images in the album, then there are meetings to be had and possible reworking.

This could be a few weeks.

Overall, I think that 2-3 weeks would be the absolute most that you should have to wait to have all the finished products in your hands. If it takes longer than that, you should have good reason why - something needed to be sent back, reprints, lengthy approval processes between photo studio and client.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having a hard way with this. Good luck!

I get most of my images on line within 48 hours of the event

Wow… 4 months is a really long time! That's not normal at all! Did you discuss the time frame with him before you paid? Is it in the contract?

The photographer that I assisted for generally took 2-3 days.

    What did the contract say?
A week is good, two at the most. His time is up contract or not.

What did you agree to? Got a contact? Invoice? 4 months is way too long.

A week is more the norm, probably more than that if the photographer is working another full time job. I have them ready in a week almost always, never more than two weeks. (I do work another FTJ) Four months is long enough. Not trying to scare you, but taking that long makes me wonder if something has gone terribly wrong. I think it is time for a serious chat with the photographer. Perhaps he is just really slow at post processing work and snowed under with other obligations. Good luck!

A week maybe two before you see them on either a disk or online. The same applies to photo books and prints. You should have them within a week maybe two of ordering them. My printers have 24 hour turn around on most prints so my clients should have them about 2 to 3 days after ordering them. Books take a few days longer.

Four months is way to long. I would be getting ready to sue the guy. With digital it really doesn't take that long.
